** Weekly Thing
** by Jamie Thingelstad
December 23, 2017
Itβs Christmas Eve Eve and we are in the final approach for the big day. There is much excitement to open presents and play, the kids are pretty eager too. π We’re spending Christmas at the lake π‘ which is really nice. Itβs quiet and relaxing. We’ll make excursions to family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as well. A batch of Wassail Tea (https://www.thingelstad.com/2004/wassail-tea/) is ready and Iβm on deck to make Glorified Rice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glorified_rice) and some Jell-O with floating fruit!
I have a suggestion for everyone, one that Iβm giving myself as well. Disconnect from the phone. I use Forest (https://www.forestapp.cc/en/) and will be trying to plant as many trees π³ as I can over Christmas. You can’t use your phone while planting a tree π΄, and yes I see the irony of using an app on your phone to help you to use your phone less π. I’ve removed all social apps from my devices and block all social networks in my browser. Itβs amazing how much noise goes away (https://micro.thingelstad.com/2017/12/21/you-remove-all.html) . π€« Have a great holiday with hugs π€ and love π and laughter π€£. Cheers! π

Semisonic (http://semisonic.com) performing Feeling Strangely Fine in it’s entirety at First Ave (http://first-avenue.com) – awesome! π

** Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Olderβ¦ β ProPublica (https://www.propublica.org/article/facebook-ads-age-discrimination-targeting)
π¬ Glad to see there are folks investigating this type of activity. Wonder what other targeting options are used to filter these opportunities.
** Equifinality - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equifinality)
π¬ What a delightful word! I didn’t know this word and it showed up in a presentation and made the logic-based thinker in me all excited. Now I need to find several places to use this.
** GTD Podcast Episode #35 β The Case For Capturing (http://gettingthingsdone.com/2017/11/episode-35-the-case-for-capturing/)
π¬ Capturing is the most basic aspect of GTD and I think sometimes overlooked. This is a very well done talk from David Allen on the important aspects of capture. Plus itβs pretty funny!
** My Must-Have iOS Apps, 2017 Edition β MacStories (https://www.macstories.net/stories/my-must-have-ios-apps-2017-edition/)
π¬ Huge review of a hundred or more iOS apps from Frederico Viticci. These are worth scanning to me just to discover new applications that I might now know about.
** Monitoring FastMail with Prometheus | FastMail Blog (https://blog.fastmail.com/2017/12/21/monitoring-fastmail-with-prometheus/)
π¬ Solid overview of Prometheus (https://prometheus.io) and how FastMail uses it. I haven’t had any experience with Prometheus but this looks really nice.
** AWS re:Invent Videos (https://reinventvideos.com/)
π¬ This is a great way to find and watch the sessions from AWS re:Invent! Fast search with decent filtering. Easily found the six videos in 2017 at level 300 or 400 about Lambda. πππ
** Mehdi Cherti β Improving my productivity using Pomodoro: takeaways after 2 years of practice (http://mehdi.cherti.name/improving-my-productivity-using-pomodoro-takeaways-after-2-years-of-practice.html)
π¬ Fun to see someone doing some analytics on their productivity system. I’ve tried Pomodoro and it doesn’t work well for what I do. I suspect that is a bit of the maker v. manager schedule issue at play. I also don’t know that you should blend GTD and Pomodoro. But, I liked this writeup and like that he used a simple shell script to make it all work. I also like that this is reflecting on two years of data.
** Letβs bury the hustle β Signal v. Noise (https://m.signalvnoise.com/lets-bury-the-hustle-9d8aee8ffe1a)
π¬ I couldn’t agree more with DHH on his distaste for the term “hustle”. When I hear entrepreneurs use that term I cringe. I don’t see any positive interpretations. DHH equals it to “the grind”. I’d connect it with “to hustle”, or “to steal”. Hustle to me always implies creating some shell of value, with a rotten core. Build value, don’t hustle.
** 10 years of professional blogging - what I’ve learned at andrewchen (http://andrewchen.co/professional-blogging/)
π¬ Great set of recommendations for professional blogging from Andrew Chen.
** Once, We Were Explorers β Rhoneisms (http://www.patrickrhone.net/once-we-were-explorers/)
π¬ What a great piece of writing from Patrick Rhone. π I say we continue to exploreβ¦ π£
** boardgame.io (https://google.github.io/boardgame.io/#/)
π¬ This is a nifty framework to make multiplayer boardgames in Javascript. > The goal of this framework is to allow a game author to essentially translate the rules of a game to a series of simple functions that describe how the game state changes when a particular move is made, and the framework takes care of the rest.
** Tips for in-house teams in a free market software culture (http://engineroom.ft.com/2017/12/01/tips-for-in-house-teams-in-a-free-market-software-culture/)
π¬ Development teams that build software for other development teams often have a unique set of challenges. You know this is happening anytime the services and products you are building are referred to as “tools” or “tooling”. The light should go off that you are still building a high quality, well designed product but your user is going to do something very different with it. I’ve seen this many times and I like some of the suggestions here, and have seen them used effectively. Open Meetings, Workshops and Pairing (across teams!) are great ways to engage with developers-as-users. I’ve wanted to do bootcamps but haven’t put that to use yet. The communications highlights in this article are great callouts the many teams miss when deploying internally. π
** Facebook admits it poses mental health risk β but says using site more can help | Technology | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/dec/15/facebook-mental-health-psychology-social-media)
π¬ Facebook acknowledging downsides of addictively using their platform. > Studies have repeatedly found that Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites can damage the emotional wellbeing of heavy users, particularly younger people. This seems like tobacco companies putting warnings on cigarettes.
** A shell command to create JSON: jo (http://jpmens.net/2016/03/05/a-shell-command-to-create-json-jo/)
π¬ Oh, I just π this! A small shell command that will create a JSON object? What a perfect embodiment of the Unix philosophy of Do One Thing and Do It Well (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy#Do_One_Thing_and_Do_It_Well) . This is a super handy utility to place at the end of your shell scripts or to create a solid interface between systems or services. Nifty! π
** If You Aspire to Be a Great Leader, Be Present (https://hbr.org/2017/12/if-you-aspire-to-be-a-great-leader-be-present)
π¬ This article hits on an important topic and one that I don’t think leaders spend enough time considering. I think people can start to think they are just a logic machine going from one conversation to the other, and that the meta around them isn’t relevant. Both are completely wrong. I’ve known for years for example that if Iβm doing an important presentation I will not sit at my computer for at least 10 minutes before. I need to get my brain in a different place. I’ve actively changed how I mentally approach my 1:1 meetings with team members. Actively managing your own energy and knowing where you are at any given point in time is really important.
** Are Men Just ‘Babies’ When They Get the Flu? Maybe Not β WebMD (https://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20171211/does-flu-hit-men-harder-than-women-maybe-so#1)
π¬ Vindication for when I get taken down my a βman coldβ! π·π
** Why Lightroom CC Is a Big Step Up from Appleβs Photos - TidBITS (http://tidbits.com/article/17666)
π¬ I haven’t used Lightroom much in the last couple of years but itβs still my go to for power user functionality with photos. Interesting to see Adobe taking a run at a complete rethink of Lightroom. The naming is really confusing, but I might check this out.

- You remove all the social apps from your iPhone and you realize it wont fill all your idle moments. At first this makes you angry β damn you, entertain me! Then you realize idle moments are good. Life happens in those idle moments too. (https://micro.thingelstad.com/2017/12/21/you-remove-all.html)

- We went to Martina for the first time last night and I was very impressed! The space is great and we got to sit right by the kitchen and watch the woodfire grill being stoked. We started with the Crab Cakes which were amazing. Then we had the Pork Chop Pizzaiola and Fusilli with Lamb Shoulder for the main and both were fabulous. The Panqueque dessert was delicious. The meal didnβt cost an arm and a leg and they even have a kids menu and mocktails, which we will likely try out next time when we bring the whole family.
