Weekly Thing
July 15, 2017

This week was absolutely bananas! ๐ย One of those weeks where you just hold on tight and manage to the end as best you can. Don't get me wrong, all good stuff, just a lot of it! Some sugar on top of it all --ย Minnestar launched a brand new website, and we had another great Minnedemo event this week!
This week brings a brand new section to the Weekly Thing, a highlighted iOS application. I will use this to share a recent iOS application that I have found valuable and why. I think this will be a lot of fun. Iโm always trying out new applications and Iโm looking forward to sharing them. ๐

Minnedemo happens at a wide variety of venues, butย itโs always a lot of fun to have it in a busy place like Downtown Minneapolis and to see the event name 'up in lights'! ๐ก

Eleven Experts Share The Secrets of Scheduling Everything in Your Calendar โ The School for Scheduling Everything
๐ฌ Managing your calendar is an important task most of us. I was also excited to see my friend Garrick Van Buren in here! I've thought a lot about calendaring methods and tools. The one outcome I have so far is it is very personal and has to be appropriate for your demands. One size certainly does not fit all in this area.
Introductory bullshit detection for non-technical managers
๐ฌ Good article that, by the way, isn't just for non-technical managers. I've seen many technical managers get sidelined working through projects.
The Learning Water Meter - FLUID
๐ฌ I saw this Minnesota-made product at Minnedemo this week and it looks great! There are a number of devices like this for electricity, but I hadn't seen one for measuring and monitoring water use.
Caddy - The HTTP/2 Web Server with Automatic HTTPS
๐ฌ I hadn't heard of this web server but it looks fabulous! Every feature looks great and it looks super simple to run. Iโm trying to not run any of my own infrastructure, but apps like this make it compelling and really easy if you do.
OmniGraffle 3.0 Brings the Power of Its macOS Counterpart to iOS โ MacStories
๐ฌ Itโs great to see what OmniGroup is doing with there applications on iOS. They are innovating in user experience, capability and business model. If you are wondering how professional software will look in 10 years, look at OmniGroup. Iโm also very excited about the launch of Omni Automation, their Javascript automation framework here. I canโt wait to see that appear in OmniFocus.
asocialfolder | Markdown-based, Dropbox-enabled website hosting
๐ฌ What a cool concept, use Dropbox to put static markdown files in and publish them right away to the web. For simple sites this would be a very easy way to get content online.
Going beyond the basic checklist - Next Action Associates
๐ฌ Nice summary of a book I think everyone should read, Checklist Manifesto!
prooffreader.com: Graphing the distribution of English letters towards the beginning, middle or end of words
๐ฌ Fun data analysis of english text. I like the use of sparklines to show small multiples.
Network Effects
๐ฌ Very well done overview of network effects by Andreessen Horowitz Anu Hariharan. Great introduction of what network effect is, what the different classifications and terms are and how to think about it. I love the definition of platform in network context here. ๐ก via @sk_shivani
Scapple for macOS and Windows
๐ฌ Ran into this application and was intrigued. It seems like the easiest tool to make Wardley Maps that I've seen.
DRM Is Toxic To Culture | Meshed Insights Ltd
๐ฌ More on how DRM is bad for everyone.
Processing Points - Why We Need Them โ MyProductiveMac
๐ฌ I don't use this term of 'processing points' very often but I like the concept.
Eight Years of Victory (Pinboard Blog)
๐ฌ I like how Maciej of Pinboard is very open about the key metrics of Pinboard. Another view of the indie software world as a business and how they can slowly build and become nicely profitable.
Acorn 6 Released
๐ฌ I use Acorn and love what Gus Mueller is doing with this. Itโs also fun to watch as an indie developer goes right at Adobe Photoshop -- one of the largest, most established pieces of software.
The Future of Operations: A Developer | Forrester Blogs
๐ฌ Good article on the blurring that is occurring in traditional roles between what has been operations and development.
Design patterns for microservices | Blog | Microsoft Azure
๐ฌ I've always admired Microsofts architecture guidance. Nice to see them doing this work for microservices as well.
The W3C has overruled members' objections and will publish its DRM for videos / Boing Boing
๐ฌ A few years ago it felt like our industry had pushed DRM back a bit and it was receding. In music DRM was all but gone after Apple forced the industry there. Now with the move to streaming music everything is DRM blocked again. The role of the W3C with DRM is a sticky one, but this doesn't look very good.

Internet Archive is a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more. I have been a supporter of the Internet Archive for many years and I think their mission is fabulous! The web is a major part of our culture and it the content that we put on it is sadly ephemeral. The Internet Archive is working hard to capture that information and keep it for history.ย Donate to Internet Archive today!
Highlighted iOS App ๐ฑ

Better by Ind.ie
by Ind.ie
Better is a web privacy tool for Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It protects you from tracking and behavioural advertising on the web by enforcing the principles of the Ethical Design Manifesto (ind.ie/ethical-design).
The web has (sadly) evolved to a place that you need to defend yourself against malicious and predatory activity. These days you would never use email without spam filters and blockers, truthfully the same is true for the web. I canโt recommend using a blocker enough, and if you are using a free ad blocker you are being duped. I like Better for itโs great design, built by an indie developer team and no malicious master plan. Ethics for the win!
